Our story

Artisan Painters

The story of Character Paint goes back to the early 17th Century, a time when interior decor was carried out by craftspeople skilled in the art of mixing pigments and preparing decor paints by hand. These artisans travelled from town to town mixing dry pigments and binders with water or oil to make their paints and glazes. At this time paints were made using locally sourced, natural ingredients and painters worked up custom blends to create unique and beautiful interiors.

Liquid Paints

It wasn’t until mass industrialisation that paint became available as a ready to use, liquid product. Fossil fuel based synthetic additives, the byproducts of oil refining, were added as binders and preservatives, creating the liquid paints we are familiar with today.

Our Inspiration

At Character Paint we have drawn on this rich history of the early interior decor artisans to create a range of powder based paints and glazes. Our belief is that interior decor is a unique artform, requiring the highest standard of materials. Our paints and glazes elevate painting and decorating into an expression of creativity, personality, and style that transforms living spaces into works of art.

Our UK based manufacturing plant creates small-batch paints and glazes made to exacting specifications and with high quality ingredients. Our cutting edge, bio-based formulation is free of toxic binders and preservatives. Moreover, all of our unique paints and glazes are guaranteed to be colour rich, breathable and engineered to last a lifetime.
